Korgonthurus – Kuolleestasyntynyt (Woodcut Records)
Review by Steve Thomas-Green
As well as being a writer, I also do a few regular radio shows. But one quick look at the band name, the album title and song titles such as Syyttäjäenkeli, there was no way I was going to even attempt pronouncing anything from the album, just to be ridiculed by any Finnish listeners… so a review it is then….
Korgonthurus have been around for about 20 years, on and off, and Kuolleestasyntynyt is just their third full length album… although they have made a stack of splits and Eps along the way.
Musically, it’s a bulldozing slice of old school Black Metal. It’s a bit on the raw side (although still very melodic) and the vocals don’t quite fit the mix, or they haven’t quite been mixed in properly. The drums are just pulverizing. Like an out of control juggernaut hurtling down a steep hill… they simply kill anything that’s in their way… and fuck, it all sounds rather wonderful.
And my comment on the vocals, no way detracts from Corvus’ hate-filled delivery. More of a case of the production/mix needing a couple of minor tweaks.
My Black Metal knowledge isn’t the best, I am not an aficionado of the genre… but this takes me back to the underground days of the mid-90s, when I was getting a load of tapes in from various parts of Scandinavia. It just has that magic. That certain something that money cannot buy. You either have the skills, or you don’t and this album is just about perfect… to these battered old ears of mine.
Back in the early days of the Underground scene, I was a big fan of Woodcut Records, and I’m glad to see that after 25 years, they are still releasing quality Black Metal.
And many thanks to the band for re-awakening the black side of my heart….
